Apple Dessert Pops -  Think candied apples but 1,000 times better.  Bits of apple are dunked in chocolate and drizzled with dulce de leche.  These are the perfect one bite treat for when you crave just a little something special without over-doing it.

    Apple Pop Dessert

Just look at how easy these Apple Dessert Pops are to make in this video:

My family went apple picking this weekend.  Apple picking is a huge New England tradition.  We go every year.  I have always gone every year since I was just a kid.  Chances are, if you live in Massachusetts, you go apple picking.  Even though we have an apple orchard about 7 minutes from our house, we all pack into the car and drive over an hour to an orchard.  For me, it's all about the family time spent in the car and seeing all the leaves along the way that have begun changing colors.  If you've never been to New England in the fall, you're really missing out on some serious natural beauty.

Anyway, every year I come home with a gazillion over-priced apples (and maybe a few fresh cider donuts too) and I start in on making pies, breads and cakes and even apple cheesecake.  The kids are excited for apples for a few days and then the excitement kind of fizzles out.  This year I was determined to make these apples exciting again.

I searched around and found that dulce de leche is a trending flavor right now.  I also read that World Dulce de Leche day is coming up on October 11th.  Who knew?  Anyway, after seeing dulce de leche all over the web, I decided I could take a classic caramel apple and give it a new modern twist but turning it into a bite sized dulce de leche apple dessert pop!  How fun is that?

Once I finalized my idea, I immediately ran out and grabbed Nestle La Lechera Dulce de Leche.  Oh, I should mention, not only does it come in a can but now an easy squeeze bottle too!  For this recipe I used the squeeze bottle.

The problem with covering an entire apple with sweets is that it's just too much.  I wanted something small enough that it could be a one bite treat, so I used a melon baller to scoop out the apple "balls".  Then I just popped a stick in them, dipped in melted chocolate and drizzled with dulce de leche.  If you wanted to add nuts or sprinkles to the party just roll the pops in the topping before the chocolate hardens.  My daughter was eye-balling these so I couldn't use nuts (she's allergic).

I have to tell you, when we were all around the table after dinner and I served up these treats, there was nothing but smiles!

    Ingredients

    • 2 apples
    • 1.5 C chocolate melting wafers see note
    • La Lechera dulce de leche squeeze bottle
    • pop sticks

    • Use a melon baller to ball out the apple.
    • Insert a stick into the top of the rounded part of the apple "ball".
    • Place chocolate in a bowl and melt in microwave, 50% power for 1 minute. Stir. Repeat in 30 second intervals until chocolate is smooth.
    • Dip each "ball" into the chocolate. Place on parchment paper. Pop in the refrigerator for a few minutes to speed up the hardening process if desired.
    • Drizzle dulce de leche over hardened chocolate.

    Notes

If chocolate melting wafers are no available, combine 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips with 2 teaspoon coconut oil for the same effect.

What a great idea! I agree, a whole apple would be too much but these are just right!

I love that these are bits of apple and not the whole thing. Besides the fact that I have a hard time biting into a whole candy covered apple, I rarely want that much sweet stuff. So these are awesome for that. And this La Lachera is great - what a fun and tasty twist! I can't wait to try these.

This is such a great idea! So much easier to manage the little bites than to have a big candied apple! 🙂 I can't wait to try it!

These are the perfect sized dessert! Just a taste is what I usually want, but with that dulce de leche sauce I might want two!

I have not tested this with freezing so I can't say for certain.
