🔪Ingredients
As I mentioned above, this easy pasta dinner only requires six ingredients. It is also a recipe that can be altered very easily if you are missing an ingredient.
Something you may notice is that my taco pasta doesn't contain cream cheese whereas most other recipes do. I simply don't think it is a necessary ingredient.
See printable recipe card at bottom for measurements.
- Meat - I use ground beef but you can also lighten up the dish by using ground turkey or chicken
- Seasoning - Taco seasoning, whatever level of spiciness you enjoy will work.
- Pasta - A small shape works best, try elbows or small shells
- Broth - Beef works best but if using ground turkey or chicken you could sub in chicken broth
- Cheese - Shredded cheddar, cheddar-jack or cheddar blend
- Sauce - Tomato sauce or you can use salsa instead. The tomato sauce seems to work better for picky kids but salsa will give more taco flavor.
TIP: Use lean ground beef to avoid the need to drain the excess grease that renders when cooking.
📹Recipe video
Because this recipe is so easy, it is a great one to teach the kids to cook. My son had to prepare a cooking video for Scouts, so I thought I'd share that.
Always supervise children when cooking.
🍲Simple cooking instructions
Brown ground beef, breaking up as it cooks.
Stir in taco seasoning, sauce and beef broth.
Add the pasta. Do not stir it in fully but simply push it into the broth. Cover, seal and pressure cook.
Quick release the pressure. Add cheese and pop the lid back on for a few minutes to help cheese melt.
Stir it all together and serve.
📃Double the recipe
The recipe as written gives four very generously sized portions. It is super easy to double this recipe.
Double all ingredients but keep the cook time the same!
🥘Substitutions and additions
I like to use this recipe as a baseline. It is simple and the kids love this recipe as is. But, some of my other family members like to stir in a few ingredients just before eating.
Here are a few of our preferred additions to taco pasta.
- canned black beans
- diced jalapenos
- guacamole
- sour cream
- cilantro
- scallions
- canned corn kernels
🍽️Equipment
This recipe requires an electric pressure cooker. I use the Instant Pot brand and it seems to be the most trusted brand out there.
If you are in the market for a new Instant Pot, I have had the 6 quart Instant Pot Duo since 2017 and I feel confident in recommending it.
❓FAQ
You do not need to drain the grease if you are using a lean beef. If you are using a higher fat content beef, it might be beneficial to drain it.
Quick release simply means you manually open the vent to release the pressure rather than letting it release over time.

I love taco pasta. I wonder if I could try this in the crockpot or in a dutch oven on the stove.
foodyschmoody says
I'm sure you could do it stove top, although you might need to increase the liquid.
Heather says
I have heard so many amazing things about instant pots - but I do not have one! This recipe makes me want to go out and get one though - yum!
Brandy says
Everyone is with these instant pots, I don't have one yet. I am still rolling old school with my slow cookers aka the crock pots. I love them, not ready to part with them just yet. When I do get an instant pot, I will most definitely be trying this dish on a cool fall day!
foodyschmoody says
I was a long hold out too but now that I finally made the move I'm not sure why the heck I waited so long!
Cathy D. says
Keep your slow cooker. It will be useful when you have something that you want to cook in it and to take to a cook out or buffet and not want to worry about someone dropping or damaging your $100+ Instant Pot when you can buy another slow cooker for $25+. But, the Instant Pot has so many advantages. I love my 6 quart and have since bought a 3 quart. Use almost daily. There are so many great IP recipes, that it will take me a long time to try all of them. But I will, love trying new things. Not all are winners but haven't had a complete failure yet and use a!most daily for 3+ months. Good luck in whatever you chose.
K.C. says
Hey Brandy, I just got my IP and will give this recipe a shot. However, this can be made on the stove or in your crock pot just as easy as it is in the IP. Give it a shot there and if you like it then you can file it away for when you get your IP. Also, by trying it now you can make changes to the recipe that you would like to make and have it all ready to go when the time comes. Thank you for the recipe Foody. Hope you don't mind me throwing this out there.
Alicia says
This looks so good. I love taco like everything, so I will be trying this out!
Lorelai @ Life With Lorelai says
Ooh, two of my favorite meals tacos and pasta)in one instant pot! This recipe sounds delicious. I am going to have to give it a try.
Carrie says
This sounds really delicious. I bet all the kids really would enjoy this recipe.
Alana says
I used Trader Joe's 96/4 ground beef, I subbed the taco seasoning mix and the tomato sauce for one can of the El Pato seasoned tomato sauce in the yellow can, I used whole grain medium shell pasta to save a few points and I reduced the cheese to one cup and chose Trader Joe's Fancy shredded lite Mexican blend even though the mozzarella would have been less.
With my swaps, as run through the Weight Watchers Recipe Builder, this is 4 eye-poppingly large portions for only 10 SmartPoints.
foodyschmoody says
Great way to lighten it up a bit. Thanks for sharing your adjustments. Glad you enjoyed!!!
Susan says
Thank you! You answered my question on how many servings this is! I have a family of 8... so I have 6-8 eating every night!
Trish says
Yeah, you'll need to double the recipe or serve salad, soup and bread with the dinner.
Michelle says
I didnt have any ground beef, so I browned some skinless boneless chicken thighs and cut them up into very small pieces, but still used the beef broth. Also threw in some rinsed black beans and some fresh corn left from cutting off the cob, it was yummy! Cant wait to go shopping and stock up on ground beef for taco pasta!
foodyschmoody says
Great way to roll w/ what you had on hand - love it. That's what I'm all about! Glad you enjoyed it and maybe I'll try it your way one of these days. Enjoy!
Sheilah Phan says
Manual low pressure or high pressure?
foodyschmoody says
Manual high
Shannon says
Did you drain ground beef before adding other ingredients?
foodyschmoody says
I didn't. I used a pretty lean ground beef so there wasn't much to drain. If you have excess grease I would drain. I almost always use a really lean product when using the IP to avoid the extra step.
Corinna says
If I double the amount of pasta, would I need to double the liquid or meat?
foodyschmoody says
I have yet to double this recipe. My best guess would be that you would want to add more meat, so the pasta doesn't overtake the meat too much. As far as the liquid, I would add more but maybe not so much as to double it. Perhaps just enough to just cover the pasta. I would love to hear how it comes out!
Mary Howard says
I have doubled it and literally double each ingredient, but keep the cooking time the same. It's PERFECT! Definitely one of our fab IP recipes. Thanks!
foodyschmoody says
So awesome to hear! Thanks so much for your feedback! Glad to know it doubles easily!
Christina says
Did you double in a 6qt?
foodyschmoody says
I have not actually doubled the recipe but others have reported doubling it w/ no problem.
Michelle says
Awesome! We needed a larger recipe too so this works for me!
Chris Lockwood says
I am wondering how to double the entire recipe as well. Please advise.
foodyschmoody says
I have not actually doubled the recipe, but poster above you has reported doubling all ingredients and it has worked well for her!
Karen says
I doubled the recipe and didn't change cooking time. It can't out perfect!!
Karen says

foodyschmoody says
Great! So glad you enjoyed it!
Instant Pot Eats says
Looks incredible. Tacos and pasta are absolutely two of my favourite foods as well, nothing like that combo! This is a must try xx
foodyschmoody says
Thanks so much!
Jennifer says
Great recipe. Whole family enjoyed it. Only change I made was using low sodium beef broth.
Ann says
What size instapot do you have?
foodyschmoody says
I have the 6qt.
Heather Myers says
This may be a dumb question but I'm new to the instant pot, do we cook the pasta before putting it in the instant pot with everything else?
foodyschmoody says
No dumb questions here, Heather. No, that's the beauty of this recipe, all done in one pot. No need to cook pasta ahead of time. Enjoy!
Amy says
Is the pasta put in uncooked or cooked? Tks
foodyschmoody says
uncooked! That's the beauty of a recipe like this - super easy!
Meliisa says
Made with refrigerated cheese tortellini and subbed salsa for the sauce (didn't have any on hand). It's a new favorite meal with my guys. Doubling up next time for my son to take home. Thanks for this great recipe!
foodyschmoody says
I love the tortellini change up!
Rachellr says
What would I do if I wanted to use rice in place of pasta? Is that doable?
foodyschmoody says
I wish I had the answer for you. I haven't tried it w/ rice in the IP yet. I have a taco rice skillet meal you could look into but right now I don't have an IP version.
Debra C. says
This was the FIRST meal I made with my Instant Pot and it was SUCCESS!!! And super fabulous too - I loved the flavors and it was cooked just perfect. So easy too. Can't wait to try another one of your great IP recipes!!!
J says
How many servings is this?
foodyschmoody says
8 oz of pasta is generally 4 servings. However, this fed my family of 5 with a little leftover.
Deb says
I miss the creaminess the cream cheese added to your previous Taco Pasta Casserole. Is there a reason you don't stir it in at the end? I'm new to IP cooking so I don't want to take a chance of messing up this dish but would like to know. Great recipe by the way!
foodyschmoody says
There isn't much reason I didn't do it, other than my kids don't love the cream cheese addition like I do. You can certainly stir in cream cheese just do it after the pressure cooking. As a matter of fact last night I made a buffalo chicken pasta in the IP and stirred cream cheese in at the end. I like to make sure the cream cheese is either softened or room temp to make it easier to stir in. Enjoy!
Linda Lorenzo says
This was very good and so quick and easy. I added some red pepper flakes. Think I will let it sit 1 minute before releasing pressure next time. Topped with sour cream. Like the suggestions of corn & black beans.
foodyschmoody says
Great! So glad you enjoyed it. I wonder, why the natural release for a minute? Was the pasta underdone? I'd love the feedback. I love the idea of the beans and corn too but I don't think I could get my own kids on board for that. Thanks!!!
Linda Lorenzo says
Sorry didn't see this before. I think because I had a thick Italian pasta (orecchiette) it was a little undercooked. Have done it since with your time and it is fine (different pasta).
Neeka says
My family of 4 must have been really hungry, we could have had twice as much. Will double recipe next time....so good!
foodyschmoody says
So glad you enjoyed it! We tend to gobble this right up too!
V says
Really yummy - family of four (two toddlers) ate it up! I used ground turkey and 'mexican blend' cheese. I'm looking forward to making this again next week.
foodyschmoody says
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lynnsey says
CAn you use frozen ground beef?
foodyschmoody says
I cannot say either way as I've not tried it with frozen.
SandyToes says
I made a half recipe of this to feed two, in my IP Mini. Using what I had, I subbed elbows for the shells, 1.5tbls tomato paste + 3 oz additional liquid to sub for 4 oz of tomato sauce. Timing and liquid were spot-on, and the flavor was good, but a little one-note. I think the tomato paste substitution was to blame, tomato sauce is generally more acidic and often has some seasonings added and would have made it better, I’m sure. I think onions and a jalapeno pepper would be nice additions, and I can pretend I’m getting some veggies. All in all, a very nice and easy meal to suit our lazy day after Christmas, when I didn’t want to cook. And it was ready in 15 minutes flat! Hard to find fault with that.
The meat, liquid and pasta is a terrific jumping-off point to make an endless variety of homemade hamburger helper type meals. I will defintely make it as written next time and then try experimenting with the base recipe to see what fun things I can make. Thanks for doing the hard work developing these recipes. Bloggers like you are a jewel beyond price!
foodyschmoody says
Thanks for the feedback. I think you will find it a better recipe when using the sauce rather than the paste. As with most of my recipes, you are right, this is a recipe that can easily be adjusted to your own taste.
Hayley says
I'd like to make this recipe but I'm unsure how much 8 oz of pasta is. Would it be equivalent to one cup dried? Thank you.
foodyschmoody says
My box of pasta was 16 oz so I basically just use half a box. I think the standard in pasta boxes is 16 oz so I think you are safe with half a box. I hope that helps.
Hayley says
Thank you for such a fast response. Pasta here is mostly sold in plastic bags. I'll try a cup and hope it works!
AlliH says
Hi Hayley! Just FYI, when a box (or bag) says it contains 16 oz of pasta, it's by weight rather than volume so a cup is probably not going to be enough pasta. A cup is 8 oz by volume and dried pasta is pretty light so a cup will almost certainly weigh less than half a pound. When you buy your next bag, it should tell you how much pasta is in there by weight. If you are in the US, that probably means it will be in ounces so you can figure out from there how much of the bag to use if you are halving this recipe. But if you are somewhere that uses the metric system you'll want to use about 225 grams of dried pasta. (Google tells me the exact conversion is 8 oz = 226.796 grams). If you don't have a small kitchen scale I would highly recommend getting one if you can. Most come with a setting that lets you switch between grams and ounces so it will work either way. Hope this helps - and happy cooking!
foodyschmoody says
Agreed, I don't think 1 C of pasta would be enough. Great information, thanks for answering this. I love having helpful readers 🙂
Shari Giarraputo says
Omg!! I was just wondering the same thing. I just weighed out the pasta. Otherwise, it was not much one cup. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thank you!!!
AlliH says
New reader, first time commenter! Christine, I love your blog and your perspective. Thanks for sharing all of your tasty recipes! I'm an instant pot newbie and just playing lots of detective right now to find lots of fun recipes to try in my new toy. 🙂 I tweaked this recipe to add some of my favorite mexican flavors like peppers (hot and not), onions and corn. (I'd do beans too but I'm the only one in my house that eats them!) Delicious! And I really appreciate that you encourage your readers to play around with your recipes to find out what "version" they'll love best. Can't wait to see what you share next!
foodyschmoody says
Welcome! Thanks so much for your comments. Love that you played around w/ this recipe. I would also love to add beans to it but then I'd be the only one eating it as well. Glad to have you following along!
Danni Hughes says
I made this for the family tonight and the pasta was cooked perfect. We love Mexican food and I make a lot of my food from scratch, ie, enchilada sauce and refried beans. That being said, we found this a little bland. I had even added more taco seasoning as it didn't look like enough. I have made quite a few IP recipes and found them to be bland, especially when cooking pasta in them. I think the water is to blame. I am going to make this again next week and increase the taco seasoning again and add a can of drained tomatoes and drained Mexi corn. There have been many comments on the IP FB community about recipes being bland so I hope this will help some make better dishes. Thank you so much for your hard work in formulating this recipe and publishing it. Look forward to more in the future.
foodyschmoody says
In order to get my kids to eat dishes like this, I have to keep them a little simple. That being said, you are the first to say it was bland so I'm a bit surprised. I think black beans would make an excellent stir in, as would peppers etc. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review and comment!
Rebecca says
I don’t have a manual button would it be the pressure cook button on normal?
foodyschmoody says
Probably. I only know the machine I use which is labeled manual pressure.
Diane McVey says
Yes
Amy says
Delicious! I can’t wait for my family to get home to have their dinner. I just couldn’t wait. So easy! I have only used my IP 5 or 6 times so, I am still learning. This was my first time using the Sauté feature. I love it! Both the IP and this Taco Pasta recipe.
foodyschmoody says
So happy to hear it!! I hope the family loved it as much as you did! I so much appreciate you taking the time to rate the recipe!
Ashley says
I'm making this receipt now and realized I don't have broth. Can you use water instead or will it take away the flavor?
foodyschmoody says
I think water would be fine. Good luck. Please let me know how it turns out!
larry schultz says
what is the difference between a instant pot and a pressure cooker? would there be a differance in time cooked?
foodyschmoody says
Instant Pot is just the brand name of an electric pressure cooker. I have never used a traditional stove top cooker but I would imagine cook times would be similar.
Shari Giarraputo says
Just made this for tonight's dinner. Turned out great. I ended up weighing out 8 ounces and it worked out great. I actually have leftovers. It definitely reminded me of hamburger helper. I had a cousin that always made hamburger helper. I was never a fan. Mainly because its processed food. I will definitely make it again. We have a busy schedule. Great to make in a flash. 5 minutes to be exact. Thank you!!!
foodyschmoody says
I'm so glad it worked out for you with weighing the pasta! Thanks so much for coming back to rate the recipe - I appreciate it.
Speaking of Hamburger Helper, if you are in the market for another recipe that's "hamburger helper style" you might want to check out this one http://foodyschmoodyblog.com/instant-pot-cheeseburger-mac/ Very similar cooking process but a little different in the flavors
Shari Giarraputo says
I will look right now. Thank you so much. Awesome dinner!!!
Crystal says
Do you season your hamburger when you sauté it? This is my first time using my IP?
foodyschmoody says
For this recipe I don't because once I add in the taco seasoning, it has plenty of salt in it already
Kara K says
My family loves this super easy recipe! I add 1/2 cup onion with the ground beef and add a can of drained diced tomatoes at the end with the cheese. Top with sour cream.
foodyschmoody says
Those are great additions. My kids are so darn picky, I've got to keep it as is. But sometimes I secretly stir some beans into my own bowl. Enjoy!
Jo says
This was totally delicious, but didn't do well in the IP - it was so thick that some bits burned on to the bottom of the liner and it never came to pressure, even after I added an extra cup or so of water. It still cooked just by being in the hot water in the pot, as it would have on a stove, but took longer than expected. I used a soy ground beef to make it vegetarian, so didn't have the grease in it that it would have had if I'd used real beef; not sure if that would have made a difference. Suggestions for how to manage this?
Thanks for the recipe!
foodyschmoody says
I actually have a fix for this!!!
My sister-in-law is a vegetarian and she had the very same issue you did with this recipe. I just texted her and she said this "the crumbles suck up so much of the liquid. I have since made this again and had no issue. I cook the crumbles first and then TAKE THEM OUT and cook the pasta, then add the crumbles back in when I add the cheese". Please let me know if this works better for you!
Jo says
Thanks for the quick reply. Interesting! I think the crumbles really barely need to cook - they just have to heat up. So I might even just try skipping the first step altogether, start with the pasta and liquid, and then given them a few minutes mixed in at the end right before adding the cheese. I'll let you know how it goes!
Kathy says
how would I go about doubling the recipe? Do I cook for the same amount of time?
foodyschmoody says
I haven't personally doubled this but several others have left me comments that they have doubled all ingredients but kept cooking time the same and it was a success!
SandyToes says
I'm new to your blog, just saw this recipe posted today on the IP Mini for One or Two FB group and had to try it immediately. I scaled it down by half, used elbows because I had them, and it came out perfectly cooked in my Mini IP. My guy loved the cheesy pasta, I loved how quick and easy it was and that it uses common pantry ingredients that I always have on hand. I'll be making it again, maybe adding some diced jalapeños, or subbing Ro-Tel for the tomato sauce, just to give it a little zing.
This worked so well I can't wait to try your Cheeseburger Mac!
Lexi says
Plain tomato sauce or pasta tomato sauce?
foodyschmoody says
I try to use a plain sauce. You can use a pasta sauce, however, I would try to get one that doesn't have tons of Italian spices that will cover up the taco flavors.
Jen says
Thank you for this recipe! It is delicious. I have a hard time finding dishes all 3 kids plus husband will like, and this is one of the few they all love! It’s especially useful on those busy baseball game nights when I’m looking for something yummy, quick, and easy. Served with fresh fruit and we are a happy family.
foodyschmoody says
Awesome! This is one my entire family eats too, which is a rare yet huge win!
Sharon Young says
This is so good! I just made it and it is perfect! Yum yum yum!
Karleen Warkentin says
This is such a yummy casserole. I want to make it for a young mother who just had surgery. Can a person put the finished casserole into a baking dish and bake a few minutes and then take it? Just wondered if anyone has had good luck taking food to others without taking the whole pot along.
foodyschmoody says
If you are going to make it to bake it, maybe add a little extra liquid so it doesn't dry out during baking? Before I had an IP, I had created a baked taco pasta casserole, you might want to check out http://foodyschmoodyblog.com/taco-pasta-bake/
Pat says
I made this last night. My son and I had seconds. It was so good, I made more today for lunch for my daughter and me! Thanks for the great recipe! These six ingredients will forever live in my pantry as a delicious and quick "I don't really feel like cooking meal." Next time, I will add a salad and veggies on the side to help balance out the delicious carbs...haha!
foodyschmoody says
So glad you enjoyed it! This one definitely falls into the category of "both the kids and adults devour" which I can't say about most recipes in my house. We love it and I do usually pair with a salad as well.
Steve says
I just got my Instant Pot and this was the first recipe I tried. I did everything according to the recipe and as I was cooking it “burn” showed up on the display of my Instant Pot and so I shut it off and opened it up and it burned on the bottom of the pot. What did I do wrong. We let it set for a few more minutes to let the pasta cook a little longer and it was delicious when we ate it but I wish I knew what I did wrong.
foodyschmoody says
Sorry that happened. Welcome to the Instant Pot world. So, I've never had the burn message but what I've gathered from groups is that if there is "stuff" stuck to the bottom before you start pressure cooking you get the burn message. So, I wonder, when browning the ground beef were there lots of little bits still on the bottom? Mine usually come right up once I stir in the sauce and broth, but perhaps you need to scrape up the little bits left behind by the ground beef first.
Shari Giarraputo says
I've never heard of that either. Going to look at my owners manual. Interesting
Michelle says
I made this tonight and it was delicious! I served with side salad, black beans, sour cream & avocado slices. Wish I had some cilantro. I'm looking for recipes that I can use and meal-prep over the weekends for busy school/work weeks. This is going in my rotation...just brown and freeze the meat until I'm ready to use it. Thank you!
foodyschmoody says
So glad you enjoyed it! This has been a staple at our house. One of the only meals both the kids AND adults enjoy!
Emily Baumann says
It was a little salty for my liking but this comes from someone who doesn't salt much of anything. I will definitely be using lower sodium meat and beef broth on the next go round. Other than that, I loved the idea and will definitely make again. I have an instant crockpot so I had to tweak a bit on the times but it worked out great.
Heather says
This was really easy and so quick! Delicious recipe, thanks!
Michelle Sweetland says
This recipe was amazing, but too salty, I used zero sodium beef broth to help lower salt. But super super tasty!!!
foodyschmoody says
So glad you enjoyed it. I think the saltiness varies depending on the brands of taco seasoning, broth etc. I'm glad you found something that fit your taste!
Lauren Hurst says
Do you have nutrition facts on this?
foodyschmoody says
I'm sorry, I do not have that information.
John DeMatteo says
Great recipe and super easy. I added some onion, fresh garlic, and chopped jalapenos.
foodyschmoody says
sounds great!
Ken Ford says
We love this recipe! So easy and so delicious. And to reduce fat, we use ground turkey and (sadly) leave out the delicious cheese... although sometimes I sneak some in when reheating leftovers!
foodyschmoody says
Great way to lighten up. Glad you are enjoying the recipe!
Shari Giarraputo says
We love this recipe. You can use a 2% cheese and put it on individual bowls.
Jennifer Johnson says
Hi there. Making this right now. What is 1oz of taco seasoning?? How much does that equate to in tsps or tbsps??
foodyschmoody says
2 Tablespoons
pallavi says
I will try it..
Kate says
If i want to double the recipe, would I also do let the beef broth or will the two cups still be sufficient? This is only my second time using my new instant pot so I'm still learning!
foodyschmoody says
Welcome to the IP world! I haven't doubled the recipe but several people have reported doubling all ingredients but keeping the cook time the same. So yes, I'd double the broth if you are doubling the pasta 🙂
Dawn says
This was oh so good! My family loved it, gobbled it up! However I had issues setting my manual time! I used sauté, then switched to manual but couldn’t use my -/+ to adjust my time! Any hints on how to do that?
foodyschmoody says
I'm not sure which model you have. On my model I am able to use the +/- immediately after pressing manual.
Kim says
Doubled everything and it was DELICIOUS! Topped it with sour cream, avocado, olives and salsa! We will definitely be making this again!!
Jerri says
Mine turned out soupy!
foodyschmoody says
Hmm, I haven't had anyone else report this. Did you add the tomato sauce? Did you substitute any ingredients?
Susan A Pennington says
I tried this last night and got my first "burn" notice. I took it out of the instant pot and continued cooking it on the stove...it was SO good!! Everyone liked it, and I have 4 picky kids! Im not sure what I did wrong...the only thing I can think of is I stirred it all together before cooking and there wasnt enough liquid for the bottom? Should I have just dumped the pasta on top and not stirred before cooking??
Thank you for the great recipe!
foodyschmoody says
I have not had an issue w/ the burn notice but my suggestion would be to not stir to combine, just stir enough to have the pasta submerged in the liquid. Glad you liked the taste!
Misty says
I just made this recipe and cooked it for 7 minutes because I don't like aldente and then NPR for an additional 2 minutes. It turned out great! I used 99% fat free ground turkey. Thanks for the yummy, super easy and quick dinner!! Everyone loved it in my household!
foodyschmoody says
Glad it was a hit!
Dawn says
This combines two of our favorite foods in our house - tacos and pasta! Definitely making it for dinner soon. We just had tacos last night, but we can have this during the week 🙂 I too will have to double the recipe. Our family eats more then normal servings usually. I have found that adding equal proportions usually works when adding to recipes in the IP.
foodyschmoody says
Yes, you can double all ingredients and keep cook time the same. Enjoy!
Gail Smith says
After cooking the ground beef, do you remove the grease? I am not used to that much grease in our food.
foodyschmoody says
It depends how lean your ground beef is. I tend to use lean ground beef so there isn't a ton of grease but if you aren't using lean and it renders a lot of beef then yes, absolutely, drain the beef before adding other ingredients 🙂
Shari says
We never have a problem with the lean beef
Nicole says
Have you ever subbed salsa for the tomato sauce ?!? It’s what I have on hand and hoping it would work...
foodyschmoody says
I have not but I am pretty sure a reader has mentioned they have. I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only thing is the sauce might end up a little bit thinner than the if using the sauce.
Kim says
Can this recipe be doubled and if so what changes as far as cook time?
Kim
foodyschmoody says
Yes! Several readers have reported doubling all ingredients and keeping cook time the same! it might just take a few extra minutes to come up to pressure.
Jen says
This recipe is delicious!! I have made it as instructed so many times, but recently I made a mistake! I didn't have tomato sauce, for some reason I bought salsa instead. I gave it a shot and it was delicious, too! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
foodyschmoody says
Yes! I have also used salsa too!
Alyson says
This is the first recipe I've ever made in an instapot and it turned out great! I had to sub macaroni noodles and they came out perfect at 5 minutes.
foodyschmoody says
Yay! So glad you enjoyed it! If you liked this one you should check out my IP Cheeseburger Mac recipe. Similar idea but different flavors! Enjoy!
kim says
my picky kids loved this dish! def a hit, but unfortunately pasta was not fully cooked after 5 minutes and i had to restart the IP. i used ground turkey, but i don’t feel like that should make a difference right?!
foodyschmoody says
That's odd, I haven't heard that issue from any other reviews. I wonder if you used the medium shells or a different shape pasta? A different shape could effect cook time. A good general rule for IP pasta is half the time called for on the box for stovetop cooking, minus 1 minute. I hope that helps.
Dan says
Got the dreaded burn message. I literally stood and watched. Never reached high pressure cooking. I always have burn problems with instant pot.
I have the newest model with no manual option. I hate instant pot to be honest. I never can make it cook high pressure without burning.
foodyschmoody says
I'm so sorry you had that experience. The tip I can give you is when you add the liquid, make sure there isn't meat stuck to the bottom, make sure you scrape it all up and don't mix the pasta in so much that it sits on the bottom of the pot. The manual option is really just setting your own time rather than using a pre-set button.
Sandy says
Mine turned out soupy. Not sure why as I used the exact amount of liquid the recipe called for but it still was delicious! Just had to use bowls instead of plates.
foodyschmoody says
Really??? I wonder did you use tomato sauce or diced tomatoes and also what kind of noodles did you use?
Paige Miller says
Are you able to double this recipe? or is it too much for the pot? if so what wold be the new times for the doubled amount of food?
foodyschmoody says
Yes, you can double this as long as you have at least a 6 qt pot. The beauty of this recipe being doubled is that while you double all your ingredients, your cook time remains the same. No need to increase time on the pot. Enjoy!
Karen Hudman says
This is one of our favorite quick meals. The only thing I do different is sauteing chopped onion and bell peppers with the meat. I sometimes sub Rotel for the tomato sauce. Those changes just amp up the veggie count!
Dani says
New family favorite. And I have adult children!!
Dani Richards says
Easy, delicious... That is all!
Third time making this in the last couple of months. My kids are adults and LOVE THIS!
foodyschmoody says
wonderful to hear!
Kathy D says
Just made this for dinner and we LOVED it!! I did not have a pack of taco seasoning so googled and made my own...better than the packet so I will make my own from now on. Topped with avocado, sour cream, with homemade salsa and chips. Stuffed! Thank you for the recipe!!
Mickey Melillo says
Followed this recipe to a T. All it did was burn the bottom of my liner. This is a crappy recipe don’t use it
foodyschmoody says
I'm not sure what went wrong for you but I have hundreds of reviews both here and on pinterest of people who had great success with this recipe. I wonder if after you sauteed your ground beef it was stuck to the bottom?
Linda J. Lorenzo says
When you add the broth be sure to scrape the pan of any stuck on bits, add the pasta and stir. Then just put tomato sauce on the top, that might help. I have made this many times with tomato sauce mixed in and never had it burn.
Kathy E. says
Great recipe! I added chopped onion, green pepper and a can of black beans to the mix.next time, I’ll add corn and more seasoning to spice it up. Thanks so much!
Kirby says
Does the recipe call for tomato sauce or jarred salsa? I see this one says tomato sauce, but the TikTok says to use salsa.
foodyschmoody says
You can use either. I typically use the tomato sauce but sometimes use salsa. It depends on what I have on hand. My kids prefer it with the sauce but I prefer it with salsa.
Doug says
Very good receipt, easy to make, I add 2 crushed garlic cloves and a chopped ½ small onion while browning the meat this will adds some more flavour . Also used my home made tomato sauce. Really like this receipt.
foodyschmoody says
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Joe Greenup says
I made this for my wife and I tonight for dinner. The only substitution was the taco seasoning I made from a recipe on pinterest. It was delicious and will become a regular quick meal favorite.
foodyschmoody says
So glad you liked it! I like to play around with homemade taco seasonings too!
Breckan says
I’ve made this many times now. Thank you for such an easy, family-friendly recipe!
foodyschmoody says
I'm so glad your family enjoys it, it is still a family favorite in my house too!
Jenny says
Delicious! I made this for my family and it was a hit! I used Impossible ground "beef" and vegetable broth instead of beef broth to make it vegetarian. We topped with sour cream. Everyone loved it, including my 3 year old. It was so easy to make, too. We'll definitely be making this one again!
foodyschmoody says
Great! Glad you were able to adapt it to your needs. My sister in law used to do it vegetarian as well. I like to stir black beans in mine 🙂
KC says
This deserves all 5⭐️, I’d give 10 if I could. Super easy & flavorful, all with pantry staples as a bonus. I add 1can of rinsed black beans before the pasta (no changes to the broth) and it turns out perfect every time.
Without the black beans, my nephew who has ARFID loved this so much he not only went back for seconds, but asked for the recipe!
Highly recommend!
