If you want an actual cookie version instead of a bar, you can hop over to this recipe for Christmas m & m cookies.

Why I love this cookie bar recipe

    • Buttery and chewy and full of tasty chocolate
    • Easy to make!
    • Simple ingredients
    • No measuring or shaping cookie dough, just spread in pan and bake
    • Can make ahead and bring along to all your holiday parties
    • Customizable - add your own stir-ins like pretzels, white chocolate chips, peanut butter M&M's. You name it, you can add it!

You can also customize the colors of the candies to change up for other occasions. For example, I use green and yellow candy for my St. Patrick's Day Cookie Bars.

Looking for more Christmas inspiration? I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to Christmas treats, meals and crafts!

    Cookie bar Ingredients

Ingredients needed for these bars are all the same as a regular chocolate chip cookie recipe plus the addition of M&M's.

You'll notice there is more brown sugar than white granulated sugar. All that brown sugar is what helps these cookie bars stay chewy!

The photo below is the the prepared batter, spread into my baking dish ready for the oven. See how I arranged some of the M&M's on top like that? You don't have to but they look so much better in the end with the bright colors popping on top like that.

Cookie bar batter spread into a glass 9 by 13 baking dish.

And below is how the bars look when they're baked. Barely golden around the edge but the rest still a little soft. The color in this photo is a little off, go for a little bit lighter around the edge.

Overcooking will take away from the chewiness so don't do that!

Cooked cookie bars still in glass baking dish. The baking dish is on a towel on top of a wooden cutting board.
A wooden cutting board is the backdrop and there are six cookie bars cut into squares scattered around. There are also loose m&m candies around all the bars.

What occasions to serve M&M Cookie Bars

    • perfect for any party you are attending, especially holiday parties
    • great in goodie bags for a take home treat
    • gift to a neighbor or friend
    • kids will love these as a surprise after school treat

These cookie bars look amazing! We’re currently posted overseas and I’m hoping to make these for a holiday party we have coming up. One problem... I can’t find M&Ms anywhere! I did find mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups that I bought. My question is, would this recipe work adding peanut butter cups in place of the M&Ms? Or should I just leave out that part and make only with chocolate chips? Thanks!

hmmm, I've never done this w/ PB cups (daughter is allergic to PB) but I think if it were me, I would make the bars w/ the chips and then maybe a few minutes before the bars are done, I would press the PB cups in and then finish cooking. I'm afraid adding them too early would result in them melting. Please let me know how they turn out.

I haven't frozen them but I think they would do just fine. I found this guide on freezing desserts, it specifically states cookie bars if you scroll down https://anitalianinmykitchen.com/my-moms-best-christmas-cookies-and-bars/freezing-cookies-and-bars/

Super easy, right?! I love bars so much better than cookies because they're all done in one shot. No more waiting for the first batch and for the cookie sheet to cool etc. So glad you enjoyed them!
