I am typically a savory cook. I don't love all the intricate details required for baking and dessert recipes.

However, give me a good shortcut dessert, like using packaged brownies to make a trifle or using cake mix to make a poke cake and I'm all about it.

That's why I love making fudge this way. No melting down marshmallow or fussing with cocoa powder. It feels like cheating but tastes delicious.

If you haven't made a shortcut fudge before, I'll go over the steps.

bunch of fudge in paper liners surrounded by pink tissue paper

      Ingredients

    • Sweetened Condensed Milk
    • Milk Chocolate Chips
    • M&M candies - holiday colors
    • Salted pretzel pieces
fudge in paper liner m&m's on top

    How to make shortcut fudge

You don't need a fancy double boiler to make fudge.  What has been working for me for years is to place a glass bowl on top of a saucepan of simmering water (see instructional photos below).  Make sure the water is just at a simmer.

Place the chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in the bowl that is placed on top of a pan of simmering water.

    Stir mixture constantly until smooth.

This should take no more than five minutes total.

Once the mixture is smooth, remove the bowl from the heat and stir in the pretzels and m&m candies.

Spread mixture into a prepared 8 by 8 pan and refrigerate for about an hour before cutting into squares.

    Sweet and Salty Fudge

M&M's have themed bags of candy for just about any holiday or season. Because I originally made this as a fudge for Valentine's Day, I used their pink and white bag.

However, you could use Christmas themed candy to make a batch of Christmas Fudge

The same goes for recipes like my M&M Cookie Bars, switch up the colors to go along with any holiday!

Not a fan of m&m candies? Try out my shortcut s'mores fudge or this Hot Chocolate Fudge that has two types of chocolate chips and marshmallows - yum!

If you want to take your Sweet and Salty fudge to another level, try making it with Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk, it is easier than you think!

    Ingredients

    • 12 oz milk chocolate chips
    • 1 can 14 oz sweetened condensed milk
    • ¾ C m&m's divided
    • ¾ C pretzel pieces divided
    • Non stick cooking spray

    Instructions

    • Prepare an 8x8 pan with wax paper and non stick spray. Set aside.
    • Add enough water to a saucepan where you can rest a bowl on top and not have it touch the water. Bring water to a boil and then reduce to a simmer.
    • Place chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in glass bowl. Place over simmering water and stir often until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth.
    • Remove bowl from pan and stir in ½ C pretzel pieces and ½ C m&m's.
    • Spread mixture evenly into prepared 8x8 pan.
    • Sprinkle remaining ¼ C pretzel pieces and m&m's over the top and then lightly press ingredients into the fudge.
    • Refrigerate at least 1 hour before cutting into 1 inch squares.

My mom's two faves - chocolate covered pretzels and plain M&M's. She'd go nuts for this!
