When is the last time you thought about your butter? Yes, butter.
I can honestly say, never, until now. The only thought I have ever had about butter was whether to use butter or butter substitute. I never really thought too much about which butter to use. And quite frankly, I hate to admit, I really didn't think there was a difference. Who the heck knew some butter has hormones and artificial ingredients in it?! So when I was asked to try out Finlandia Imported Butter, I was intrigued.
I hadn't ever noticed Finlandia Butter while shopping, but was glad to see I could find it right at Shaw's Supermarket amongst the other butter products.
I thought about how I wanted to try the butter, in order to really get the flavor and to be able to see (or taste) if there really is a difference. I decided the best result would come from going straight up on a slice of bread. I grabbed a loaf of French bread and spread on some of the Finlandia Salted Butter and I was actually surprised that I could really taste a difference. While I was having my taste test, of course, little fingers kept coming in and stealing my experiment!
Once I was sold on the taste I decided to do a bit of research on this "new to me" butter and here are a few things I found out:
- Finlandia uses pure fresh milk from cows cared for on small Finnish family-owned farms.
- No artificial ingredients.
- No hormones added (cows are not given rBST)
- The fresh milk is carefully churned and cooled to the perfect temperate that creates a delightfully creamy texture and smooth flavor.
- The salted variety is perfect for spreading on fresh breads or baked goods and the unsalted variety is amazing to use in your favorite baking recipe.
After I devoured a loaf of bread totally appropriate amount of bread, I decided to go ahead and use the unsalted variety in a recipe too. Since my son was already begging me to make banana bread, I just altered my recipe for My Best Banana Bread a little bit.
The biggest takeaway for me, from this, is that I really should pay more attention to what I am feeding my family. I am guilty of being a bit naïve in thinking I am not loading my family with hormones and artificial ingredients, so I am vowing to pay closer attention to these details! One more reason I'm glad to have been asked to try Finlandia!

I took a good look at butter when I blogged about The Real Food Experience earlier this year. You really have to be careful of dairy in any form. Good to know you've found a "safe" butter.
