Marie Callender's Beef Pot Pie over Kohlrabi Mash - A wholesome family meal option with a unique homemade vegetable side dish.

    mariecallenders2wm

I think we can all agree that we grew up eating pot pies right?  I'm sure of it.  Classic American comfort food, right? I have made my family their fair share of homemade pot pies too, but with the holidays looming on the horizon, I'm thinking of ways to make my life easier and that doesn't include making pie crusts from scratch.  I've found that the Marie Callender's Pot Pies are the most like Pot Pies Mom used to make.  The crust is golden and flaky and for a crust girl like myself, that is key.  My favorite part of any pie is the crust.  This works out well because my husband isn't a "crust guy" so I can sometimes steal a nibble or two from his plate.

In order to keep that beautiful crust from burning you should definitely follow the package instructions and wrap the edges in foil while cooking.

Marie Callender's Pot Pie over Kohlrabi Mash

Okay, so we all know a pot pie is a meal in and of itself but my husband, as you know from past posts, is a mashed potato maniac.  The guy could eat mashed potatoes every day of his life.  I, on the other hand, while I do love a good mashed potato, I tire of them really quick .  Here's the thing, mashed and creamy dishes don't have to be potatoes!  I like to serve my Marie Callender's Beef Pot Pie over a side of Mashed Kohlrabi.  Okay, calling it mashed is a stretch, it's more like a puree, but to get anyone to eat it I have to make it sound as much like mashed potatoes as possible.

The Kohlrabi mash will come together while your Pot Pie is baking away to perfection.  You treat it similar to a potato by peeling, cubing and bring up to a boil and simmering.  They do take a little bit longer than a potato, about a half hour of boiling time.  Then all I do is strain out all the water, return to the pot, add salt, pepper, butter, heavy cream and puree with an immersion blender or I guess you could dump it all into a blender or food processor.   So easy and finally not a boring side dish.

What a brilliant idea to sub kohlrabi for potatoes! I'll bet the mild, slightly sweet flavor is just lovely with hearty beef pot pie! Such a great presentation, too, with the rich gravy from the pot pie cascading over the mash! Definite comfort food!

Thanks Shelley. By your description, I can tell you are a kohlrabi fan like myself. And you are exactly right, it balances that rich gravy perfectly! I appreciate you popping over.

Thanks for sharing this idea. I have to be honest we don't make a habit of using premade items from the frozen section, however, after reading this I might at least try this brand and see how well we like it.Your Kalrobi recipe looks fab too, so I think we'll try this idea in the future. I'll let you know how it goes!

Thanks Heidy. I try to cook from scratch as much as possible but some days it just isn't going to happen between soccer, dance, CCD etc. so I like to have these easy options in a pinch. I think you would enjoy the change up to kohlrabi mash, something different 🙂

Love your post about pot pies. I grew up on those, my favorite was the Turkey!
But I have to admit I haven't eaten them for years, now you've got me thinking about them again.

      Great fall post 🙂

Mashed kohlrabi?! This is utterly genius! I've only used kohlrabi a couple of times, but I remember the texture being similar to potato, so this makes perfect sense. Looks lovely!
