Cherry Dump Cake is an easy dessert that delivers big flavors with only four ingredients and minimal effort.

The best part is, all you need is a can of sweet cherry pie filling, a yellow cake mix, a stick of butter and a little brown sugar (or other sweeteners work too). Too easy not to make, right?

You know, I love to cook, but I absolutely do not like to bake. Everything is so precise and needs so many ingredients and bowls. I just don't function like that. love a good shortcut when it comes to baking though and this fruit dump cake is the perfect shortcut dessert.

    🍰What is a dump cake?

A dump cake is simply a dessert that is made up of a fruit filling, typically a pie filling.

On top of the pie filling, you add a dry cake mix and then melted butter. You do not even stir it. As a matter of fact, stirring is a no-no for this.

So you quite literally dump the ingredients and bake.

Dump cake is similar to a cobbler.

Some recipes call for additional sweetener or vanilla extract but those are optional.

    📋Dump Cake Ingredient List

As I mentioned above, this ingredient list is simple and it is versatile to change up the flavors.

Measurements can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of this page.

    • Cherry Pie Filling - canned pie filling or you can venture and make your own but that adds some steps.
    • Cake Mix - yellow or white both work well.
    • Butter - melted. I have not tried this recipe with butter alternatives so I am not sure about those.
    • Sweetener - brown sugar, agave syrup or even maple syrup. These are all optional and depending on the sweetness of your fruit filling you may not need them at all.

    🔪Instructions to prepare dump cake

Detailed instructions are included in the printable recipe card towards the bottom of this post. The instructions here are to give you a visual idea of how to make the Cherry Dump Cake.

Step 3: Pour the melted butter over the cake mix. If adding brown sugar, do that over the butter. Bake.

Step 4: Allow the dump cake to cool at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve as is or topped with ice cream or whipped cream.

    🍽️Recipe Tips

Fruit filling - Change up from a cherry dump cake to just about any fruit flavor. Try using strawberry pie filling or peach!

Texture - If you want some crunch, add some nuts to the top.

    🥘Storing leftovers

To store your leftover Cherry Dump Cake, simply place in an air tight container or cover cooled baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for 3 days.

    Equipment

    • 9 x 13 baking dish

    Ingredients

    • 21 ounce can cherry pie filling
    • 15.25 ounce cake mix yellow or white
    • ½ cup butter melted
    • non stick spray

    Optional

    • ¼ cup brown sugar

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 350 ℉. Spray the baking dish with non stick spray or similar.
    • Spread the cherry pie filling into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the cake mix over the cherries evenly. Pour the melted butter over the cake mix (NOTE 1). If using brown sugar, sprinkle it over the melted butter.
    • Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes. it is done when a crust has formed and the fruit is bubbling.
    • Allow cake to rest/cool for 10 minutes before serving.
    • To serve, simply scoop out of the pan and place on a plate. Top with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

    Notes

NOTE 1: Try to pour the butter as spread out as possible. The butter will melt in to the cake mix to create the crust. A tip to doing this is to make sure there are no big divots in the cake mix that will allow all the butter to pool in one area.
NOTE 2: Do not mix the ingredients together.
NOTE 3: The brown sugar isn't necessary but it adds a little sweet crust to the cake mix. You can omit it if you want.
