Can't decide between kid friendly tacos or burgers for dinner?  No need to pick, these Turkey Taco Burgers are the best of both!

    Turkey Taco Burgers by foodyschmoodyblog.com

I've shown you a few burgers this summer and up until now I thought my {Almost} Chicken Parmesan Burger was my favorite, but that was before Turkey Taco Burgers came into my life.

It all started with an idea to make a taco type Sloppy Joe and then I was like "duh, why make it messy, just turn that baby into a burger".  Seriously, one of the best ideas I've had in a while.  It's easy, it's kid friendly and it's full of taco flavor!  You can customize them too.  Obviously! You guys know I'm the queen of versatility over here.  If you didn't know that, spend a little more time browsing and you'll figure it out very quickly!

Before I get to the recipe, here are a few things about some of the ingredients:

Salsa - I used a Southwestern Salsa (medium heat) which had black beans and corn in it.  I think this works awesome AND it's a great way for your kid(s) to eat a few beans without them even noticing.

Chips - I can't even believe that I'm giving you a recipe that calls for Doritos, but {sigh}, I am.  I think the nacho flavor Doritos worked best, but if you snub your nose at Doritos, use a regular corn chip or tortilla chip.

Jalapeno - Use it or don't.  I'm not sure it added much, but I used it so I'm including it.

Avocado Cream - If you aren't into sour cream based spreads, use guacamole.  Whatever you do, use something though, the creaminess adds a great texture balance against the crunchy chips.

Taco Seasoning - I used a packet. It was original flavor, so not too hot, but not bland either. I know, it has junk in it, blah blah, sometimes, this girl just needs quick.  If you want to make your own taco seasoning, .

Okay, I think I've got all that out of the way.  Since this recipe makes 6 Turkey Taco Burgers and not everyone was home for dinner when I made them, I'm happy to report I was able to freeze the rest.  Trust me, you'll want to make a big batch and freeze some.

When I make these again(and I will, soon), I promise, I'll take better pictures.  I had already lost the light and the husband had just walked in and was starving so I snapped a few pics and then couldn't wait to dig in.  So better pictures in the future.

Okay, you may have the recipe now.  But only if you promise to come back and tell me how much you loved it!

    Ingredients

    • 2 lb ground turkey
    • ¼ C red onion finely chopped
    • 1 oz envelope taco seasoning
    • 4 T salsa
    • 1 jalapeno seeded and chopped
    • ½ C crushed Doritos nacho cheese flavor plus more for garnish.
    • 1 C shredded cheese taco variety
    • 1 C shredded lettuce
    • 6 hamburger buns

    Avocado Cream

    • 1 avocado mashed
    • ½ C sour cream
    • Juice of ½ a lime

    Instructions

    • Preheat grill to medium.
    • In a large bowl, stir together seasoning, salsa, onion and jalapeno. Mix in ground turkey. Mix in Doritos. Divide turkey mixture into equal portions and shape into patties (I got 6 large patties).
    • Oil grill grates to avoid sticking. Place burgers on grill and cook about 10 minutes, turning over as needed. Add desired amount of cheese 1 minute before removing from grill. Grill hamburger buns for 1-2 minutes if desired.
    • While burgers are cooking stir together the avocado, sour cream and lime juice to make the Avocado Cream.
    • Spread avocado cream on the inside top of the bun. Serve burgers topped with lettuce and additional crushed Doritos on the buns.

Love that you used turkey...and don't feel bad about the doritos. I have a recipe that requires them to be in it.
