A hot Vanilla Latte is delicious any time of year but there is something extra special about a warm latte during the colder months.

This warm coffee drink combines rich espresso, warm milk and vanilla syrup for a cozy afternoon treat or a morning pick-me-up.

To make a homemade latte you just need a few simple ingredients. No need to get dressed, this homemade latte is made in the comfort of your own home; skip the drive-thru!

Do you want to spice up your coffee a bit? I've been wanting to try this recipe for Pumpkin Spice Irish Coffee Drink.

☕Do I need an espresso machine to make a latte?

    No.

Of course, if you are lucky enough to have the space for an espresso machine in your kitchen, then yes, use that.

If you do not have an espresso machine, you can use any of these other options.

I have the Ninja Hot/Cold Brew system so typically I just brew some strong coffee and use that but lately, I've been all about the lattes made with instant espresso. Instant coffee has come a long way!

    📋Latte Ingredients

    • Milk - Whole milk froths best but you can swap it out for any other milk you prefer.
    • Espresso - Brewed. As mentioned above, either instant, brewed espresso or even strong coffee.
    • Syrup - Vanilla syrup or if you want, you can opt for sugar-free vanilla syrup
    • Whipped Cream

    🍵Steps to make a latte

I like to show step-by-step recipe instructions when possible for the visual learners like myself. Detailed instructions (without photos) can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

A carafe with frothed milk There is a handheld frother to the left of it. A white towel to the right of it.

First: Warm the milk and then use a handheld frother to froth the milk until it is foamy and doubled in size.

Two overhead cups of coffee with a small white prep bowl to the left and a white towel to the right.

Second: Pour the espresso (or coffee) and vanilla syrup into mugs.

Two cups of coffee with milk added to them. To the left is the carafe with the foamed milk in it.

Third: Pour the milk into the coffee. The liquid milk will naturally pour out first, leaving the foam behind. Pour or scoop the foam on top of the coffee.

Two cups of coffee with whipped cream being sprayed on top.

Lastly: Top with whipped cream if desired. You could also sprinkle some cinnamon over the top.

🔪How to make a lower calorie latte

There are a few ways to have a latte that is lower in calories or what they call a "skinny vanilla latte".

    • Use sugar-free vanilla syrup instead of regular vanilla syrup
    • Use a lower-fat milk or milk alternative

A note about using milk alternatives in lattes.

Not all milks froth the same. A higher fat content milk will froth much better than a non-fat milk. Similarly, milk alternatives such as nut milks, do not froth great. If the froth is very important to you, I'd suggest using 2% or whole milk.
