The thing I love most about these Brown Butter Blondies, besides the ridiculously good depth of flavor from the brown butter, is the bits of chocolate from the M&Ms.

Traditionally blondies do not contain chocolate. I can't help myself though. If I am indulging, I want to go all in and add chocolate to everything!

Case in point, my Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cheesecake. I couldn't be happy with just the most delicious creamy strawberry cheesecake, I had to go and add chocolate.

You'll notice the blondies in the photo above are thicker than the ones in the photo below.

The version with the red candies were baked in an 8x8 pan while the pastel version was baked in a 9x13.

You can do either but I do prefer the way the 8x8 comes out.

You know what is great about using M&Ms in these blondies? You can customize them for just about any holiday or theme.

When I originally posted this recipe, I made the blondies for Easter so I used pastel colored candies.

More recently, I made these with the Valentine themed candies.

You could use the red and green for Christmas just like I do with my Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars.

    Ingredients

    • butter (brown butter)
    • brown sugar
    • white granulated sugar
    • egg
    • vanilla extract
    • salt
    • flour
    • m&m candies

    How to make brown butter

Brown butter is simply butter that is melted and cooked until the color is browned.

The important thing to note when you are making brown butter is that it can go from perfectly brown to burned in an instant. Do not leave the stove while the butter is browning.

As your butter is browning, you'll notice the butter giving off a caramel-like smell. It's unmistakable and irresistible.

Stir or whisk the butter often as it's browning.

It is done when your butter solids have turned a caramel brown color. Remove it rom the heat.

There's an informative post on Food Network about making Brown Butter if you need more instruction.

If you just are not comfortable making your own brown butter, they do sell it in some stores, here is a Brown Butter link on Amazon.

blondies arranged on a white plate. There are m&m's scattered next to the plate.

    Instructions

Start by making the brown butter. Let it cool just a little bit.

Cream together the sugars and brown butter and then mix in everything else except the candies.

The batter will be thick, almost paste-like.

    blondie dough in mixer bowl

Stir ¾ of the m&m candies into the dough and press it into a prepared 8x8 or 9x9 baking dish.

Press the remaining candies into the top surface of the dough. I do this just so each piece will be showing the candy when serving.

blondie batter pressed into parchment lined baking dish. Baking dish is on wooden cutting board. There is a rubber spatula next to pan.

Bake them until the edges are starting to brown just a little bit.

Cool in pan for a few minutes and then remove from pan by lifting with the parchment paper. Finish cooling on wire rack.

cooked blondies laying on parchment lined cutting board. They are not cut into squares yet.

I like to cut them while they're just a tab bit warm.

Can I use regular butter instead of brown butter?

Yes. Regular butter can be used but it does need to be melted.

Can I use chocolate chips in my blondies instead of m&ms?

    Yes.

How do I know when the blondies are done cooking?

The blondies should look a little brown on the edges but still look a little underdone in the center. The blondies will continue to cook once out of the oven.

What's the best way to store blondies?

Store blondies in an air-tight container on the counter for up to 4 days.

Adding m&m candies to these blondies really gives you the best of both worlds, chocolate and blondie. Using brown butter elevates the flavor!

    Ingredients

    • 8 Tablespoons butter
    • 1 ¼ Cup brown sugar
    • ¼ Cup white granulated sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • ¼ teaspoon salt kosher
    • 1 ½ Cup flour all purpose
    • 1 Cup M&M's divided

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350. Prepare an 8x8 or 9x9 pan with parchment paper. You can use a 9x13 also but it will result in thin blondies.
    • Heat butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat stirring often. The butter is done after it stops bubbling and solids have turned caramel brown. Let it cool until just warm.
    • In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugars. Add egg, vanilla and salt and mix again.
    • Stir in Flour. Mixture will be thick.
    • Fold in ¾ of the M&M's.
    • Spread the batter in the prepared pan and smooth the top with a rubber spatula if needed. Press the remaining m&m candies on top of the batter. Bake in pre-heated oven for approximately 25-30 minutes. Blondies are done when edges have just started to brown. Center will still look a little undone. Reduce cook time to 20-25 minutes if using a 9x13 pan.
    • Allow to cool in pan for 10 minutes.
    • Lift blondies up by pulling up the parchment. Slice when cool.
